Why do I stay home with my kids? For several reasons:
1. They grow up way too fast.
2. I can't afford to pay child care, and work part time, and pay for gas to get from home, to childcare, to work, back to childcare, and back home.
3. I'm lucky enough to have a husband with a good job.
4. I don't want to work. I have enough to do keeping the house clean with four kids, one husband, one hyper dog, fourteen chickens.....
Sometimes I get all bummed out because I don't have some fabulous career. I can't afford to travel right now - which is one of my favorite things in the world to do. I don't have expensive clothes or purses. I really don't have a reason to dress up often at all. It can be depressing to know that you're not what America considers "successful" because I don't get up, do the daily office grind, go to the gym, wear business casual clothes, and bring home a nice looking paycheck. There are days I hate it. And there are days, like today, where I just don't care. But I do.
I'm home all day and I don't keep up with the housework. I don't sit on the floor and play with my kids, I don't work out. Honestly, there are some days where I have no idea what I have done all day. Maybe I've done the same thing a hundred times and it just seems mundane, or I forget. I don't want to forget why I'm at home or what I do. I want to remember that Gavin wished on a dandelion to be Spiderman, and that today, we got ice cream because Erin pooped in the potty. These things seem so small, but that's why I'm home. Its why I don't work full time - out of my home. Its why I need to get out of my house. Its why I have my Avon fun money.
Why do I do Avon?
1. I have a bit of a makeup and skin care fettish.
2. I don't have money to buy expensive make up but also want something that is going to cover up and treat my nasty skin spots. Its my business casual look ;-)
3. I make my spending money for girl's nights, and the new laptop I'm saving for, and vacations that I WILL TAKE.
4. I don't have to do any home parties. (Should move this to reason number 1.)
5. I can be home with my kiddos.
Everyone who stays home with their kids understands how badly we all need a brain break. We read, we run, we dig in the dirt, and God bless us, we have w(h)ine time. How about a little spending money too? Are you up for it?

What do you do all day?
You know Tame, whenever I think about my childhood I remember the security of coming home everyday from school to a mom. Something warm out of the oven to snack on. And never ever was I embarrased to bring someone home with me because the house was dirty. My mother made taking care of the house and kids her job and I certainly appreciated it. My brother did too. Right after I got laid off when I got married, Rich told me to stay home with Mike since we could get by on his salary. I did it for 3 years and while I personally was miserable it was a good thing for my son. When he was in school finally, I worked more hours but who cares what other people do in their lives, it's you who has to live in your house and shoes and if being a SAHM is what you do, so be it. You're my hero for sure.
ReplyDeleteYou just made me smile and tear up. Thanks Barb! *hugs*
ReplyDeleteYou DO have a fabulous career and you are doing it. I've worked most of my adult life and my most satifying job has been this one: I am my own boss and I get to call the shots here in my own house. Isn't that what you are doing too? Your kids will thank you one day if they haven't already. hugs...Diana
ReplyDeleteI go to my job that I like but don't love, and wish I were home with my kid. Oh, and I wish we didn't have bills so I didn't need a job so I could be home with my kid.
